About Us
Students in the The UAF Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry engage in rigorous, culturally relevant, and American Chemical Society[BROKEN LINK] approved curricula and pursue cutting-edge discoveries in the high latitude chemical sciences with the support of faculty who are dedicated to research[BROKEN LINK] and teaching excellence.
We offer undergraduate[BROKEN LINK] degrees in either Chemistry with three different optional concentrations.
- B.S. in Chemistry, ACS Certified
- B.S. in Chemistry with Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Concentration, extra coursework required for ACS Certification
- B.S. Chemistry with Environmental Chemistry Concentration, extra coursework required for ACS Certification
At the graduate[BROKEN LINK] level, three programs are offered:
- M.S. in Chemistry[BROKEN LINK] with concentrations in Chemistry, Biochemistry/Neuroscience, or Environmental Chemistry
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Neuroscience[BROKEN LINK]
- Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry[BROKEN LINK]
The department is centrally housed in the Reichardt building that opened in 1995 and contains laboratories, classrooms, and offices. We have thirteen (13) faculty members (tenured and tenure-track) and three full-time staff. Some faculty members within the department have joint appointments with the Institute of Arctic Biology, the Geophysical Institute, the International Arctic Research Center, or the College of Indigenous Studies. Typically, 95 undergraduate students are pursuing degrees in Chemistry. Approximately 35 graduate students are pursuing M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.

For a number of years the department published a newsletter called the AlasChemist which reviewed the department's teaching, research, and service activities each year.
