Leaders of Tomorrow: Cole Osowski and Cadence Conner Earn McLaughlin Award
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Political Science Department is celebrating the outstanding achievements of two of its students, Cole Osowski and Cadence Conner, who have been honored with the prestigious McLaughlin Award. This recognition highlights their academic excellence and leadership in the study of American politics.
The McLaughlin Award, which includes a $2,000 prize, is a testament to their dedication and impact both within and beyond the classroom. The award is named to honor excellence in the study of American Government and provides financial support to students pursuing this vital area of study. This year, the Political Science Department split the prize between two exceptional recipients, both of whom have demonstrated remarkable contributions to UAF.
Cole Osowski, a senior Political Science major, recently represented UAF at the Student Conference on U.S. Affairs at West Point Military Academy, delving into international relations and U.S. foreign policy. Reflecting on his experience in the Political Science Department, Cole said, “The department is a tight-knit community... Professors put their all into teaching and are passionate about their field. Receiving the McLaughlin award is not only a personal honor, but also a testament to the incredible opportunities and support I've received from these professors throughout my time at UAF. The financial assistance attached to the award has allowed me to focus on continuing my academic pursuits. As my time at UAF draws to an end, I want to thank my political science professors for their help, support, and academic enrichment.”
Cadence Conner, another senior majoring in Political Science, has been equally impactful. As president of the Society for Advocacy of Gender Equality (SAGE) student club, Cadence is a passionate advocate for equity and inclusion. Her excellence extends beyond Political Science; she was also named the 2023-2024 Outstanding Student of the Year in the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program. Speaking of her time in the department, Cadence shared, “Though the Political Science department at UAF is smaller than many of the other departments on campus, its size has created a unique and impactful learning environment for students, something I have benefited from immensely. With fewer students compared to larger departments, there's a greater opportunity to build meaningful relationships with both professors and peers, allowing for a much more personal academic experience. I have had the same several professors throughout my time as a Political Science student, something that has allowed them to see me as more than just a name on a roster. The professors truly want their students to succeed and will go to immense lengths to help facilitate this. Being awarded with the McLaughlin award is a huge honor, and is something I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to receive. I truly believe it would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication displayed by the professors within the Political Science Department, and all of the work they have done to help ensure my success at UAF.”
Political Science faculty member Carol Gray commended both students, stating, “Both Cadence and Cole are stellar students who show strong leadership skills and who excel in their political science classes. I expect that they will both have very promising careers in whatever fields they choose.”
Cole and Cadence exemplify the spirit of UAF: they are not only leaders in their academic pursuits but also active contributors to the broader university community. The McLaughlin Award recognizes their efforts and sets them on a promising path toward future success.
