Nobody Gets Out Alive by Leigh Newman, 2022

The UAF Department of English’s Midnight Sun Visiting Writers Series, in partnership with 49 Writers and the National Book Foundation, is excited to welcome National Book Award-honored author Leigh Newman for a special literary event, Writing Home: Author Leigh Newman in Conversation. A native of Anchorage, Newman will read from her celebrated short story collection, Nobody Gets Out Alive (2022). These vivid stories delve into Alaska’s rich history and complex present, exploring themes of resilience, hope, and survival.

The National Book Foundation is dedicated to celebrating the best in American literature, awarding the prestigious National Book Award each year to authors whose works shape the landscape of American letters. As one of the most significant literary prizes in the U.S., it shines a spotlight on writers who contribute to our cultural heritage and drive creative innovation.

49 Writers is a nonprofit organization committed to supporting the literary arts in Alaska. Through workshops, readings, and community outreach, 49 Writers fosters a vibrant community of readers and writers, connecting Alaskans with new and established voices in literature. Their partnership with the National Book Foundation on this event is an exciting opportunity to bring world-class literary talent to the Last Frontier.

The event will feature a reading from Leigh Newman, followed by a conversation about her creative inspiration, writing craft, and the role of community in her stories. Attendees will also have the chance to participate in a live Q&A session.

This event is free and open to the public! While advance registration is encouraged, walk-ins are also welcome. Be sure to register in advance.

Join us for an inspiring evening of literature, community, and conversation!
