Turkey with a Twist: UAF’s Kiln-Baked Feast
On Wednesday, November 26, 2024, the UAF Ceramics Studio buzzed with warmth, laughter, and the savory aroma of tradition as the Student Ceramics Art Guild (SCAG) hosted its 32nd Annual Thanksgiving Kiln Turkey Bake Potluck. This beloved event combines art, culinary experimentation, and community—a perfect prelude to the holiday season.
A Story Fired in Clay
The tradition began in 1992 when ceramics professor Jim Brashear, inspired by ancient Chinese clay cooking methods, decided to encase a turkey in clay, bake it in a kiln, and see what happened. “Lo and behold, it worked,” Brashear recalls with a smile. The experiment produced a perfectly baked turkey and sparked an annual event that has become a cornerstone of UAF’s holiday season.
Each year, the turkeys are prepared with care: wrapped in foil, sealed in a thick layer of clay, and placed into the studio kiln. The intense heat—typically reserved for firing pottery—transforms the bird into a succulent masterpiece. Once cooled, the clay is cracked open, revealing a steaming, perfectly cooked turkey that serves as the heart of a potluck feast.
A Celebration of Community and Creativity
This year’s event brought together many attendees, including faculty, staff, students, and community members who stayed on campus for Thanksgiving. Guests filled the studio in the Fine Arts Complex to share a variety of potluck dishes while marveling at the kiln-cooked turkeys, which were served hot and fresh from the kiln.
SCAG, a student organization that promotes ceramics and the arts, has consistently hosted the event, reinforcing its mission to foster creative expression and camaraderie. Attendees shared stories, marveled at the unique cooking method, and admired the fusion of ancient techniques and modern artistry.
As tradition dictates, the turkeys were the star of the show, but the event also highlighted the diverse talents and contributions of SCAG members, who prepared not only the food but also the beautifully crafted clay vessels used for serving and decorating.
Looking Forward
The Annual Thanksgiving Kiln Turkey Bake Potluck is more than just a meal; it’s a testament to the spirit of innovation, the joy of community, and the power of tradition. As SCAG continues to carry the torch for this unique celebration, UAF can look forward to many more years of kiln-baked cheer.
