How do we speak about identities and experiences when language itself falls short? Join the Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies (WGSS) program at UAF for an insightful discussion on this topic with guest speaker Dr. Caroline Colquhuon.

The event, “Existence as Resistance: (In)Visible Identities & Intimacies in Equatorial Guinea,” will take place on Wednesday, April 2, from 1:00 to 2:30 PM in Gruening 503H with a Zoom option available. This presentation follows a brief WGSS meeting, and attendees can enjoy pizza, brownies, and drinks while engaging in this important conversation.

Dr. Colquhuon, a scholar specializing in contemporary literature, media, and culture from the Iberian Peninsula and the Global Hispanophone, will explore the work of Equatorial Guinean author and activist Trifonia Melibea Obono. Obono’s novels challenge the notion that LGBTQ+ identities are “un-African,” bringing visibility to historically overlooked experiences and affirming their existence through literature and activism.

This event is open to students, faculty, and community members who are interested in gender studies, social justice, and the power of storytelling in advocacy.

Get Involved with WGSS!

Are you passionate about gender equality, social justice, and meaningful conversations? The Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies (WGSS) program at UAF is a space for students, faculty, and community members to come together, exchange ideas, and engage with important issues shaping our world.

Our meetings take place every first Wednesday of the month from 1:00–2:15 PM in Gruening 503H, where we discuss topics like gender, sexuality, mental health, and human rights. It’s a great opportunity to meet others who share your interests, explore new perspectives, and get involved in discussions that inspire change.

WGSS is more than just a program—it’s a community of learning and action. Whether you’re interested in research, activism, or simply looking for a space to talk about topics that matter, we welcome you to join us.
