Choosing Dual Enrollment Courses at UAF

The first step you should take once you know that you want to join a dual enrollment program is to look through the courses for that program and find some that are relevant to your academic or career goals.

As a dual enrollment student in the North Star College program, you'll take required courses that include:

  • One junior-level course your junior year and DEVS (or Developmental Studies) support classes to help you learn vital college study skills.
  • One senior-level course and DEVS support class to continue building college study skills.
  • DEVS courses will help you to create a strong academic foundation to build on as you progress through your college journey. DEVS classes you may take include:
    • DEVS F101 – Skills for College and Career Success
    • DEVS F104 – University Communications
    • DEVS F105 – Academic Reading for College
    • DEVS F110 – College Success Skills

In addition to these courses, you can choose classes from the wide selection of courses available at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. You’ll take a minimum of seven credits each semester, but you can take up to 15 college credits per semester.

If you’re thinking about joining a dual enrollment program and know that you want to continue on to the University of Alaska Fairbanks after graduation, UAF's Alaska Higher Education Admission Decision (AHEAD) program may be the perfect option for you.

As a dual enrollment student in the AHEAD program, you’ll be formally admitted to UAF as a general studies major and can take courses full-time. This is a great opportunity to meet dual enrollment requirements while completing general education courses and trying out different majors at UAF.

Alaska Advantage is an ideal dual enrollment program for students who want to take University of Alaska Fairbanks courses but cannot or prefer not to travel to campus. Wherever you live in Alaska, you’ll have the chance to take the same great courses that are offered on campus, but online.

Unlike North Star College, there’s no minimum credit hours that you must take each semester. In fact, if this is your first time as a dual enrollment student, we recommend that you start with one class at a time.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks offers more than 100 General Education Requirement (GER) courses online. These are courses required for bachelor's, associate of arts and associate of science degrees. Some of the exciting courses you could take as introductions to different fields and topics include:

  • BA F151X – Introduction to Business
  • ENGL F270X – Intro to Creative Writing
  • HS S101 – Intro to Health Sciences
  • CS F103 – Intro to Computer Programming

These are just few of the courses you can take to meet both high school and dual enrollment requirements at UAF. Get a taste of different majors and see what academic path is right for you.

Next Steps

After you’ve found courses that you'd like to take, discuss them with your parents and high school counselor to ensure that they meet requirements for high school graduation.

If you're in the North Star College program, you'll work closely with the NSC school district counselor and a UAF academic advisor to choose the courses that fit your needs.

Alaska Advantage students should get approval from their school district to determine which courses will fulfill high school credit requirements.
