Climate change focus of 25th annual Invasive Species Workshop

Managing invasive species in a changing climate will be the focus of the 25th annual Alaska Invasive Species Workshop on Nov. 12-14 in Fairbanks. The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service is coordinating the workshop with the Alaska Invasive Species Partnership, an informal statewide group of agencies, organizations and individuals concerned about invasive species. Key Issue to be closed Nov. 12-13

Due to a software upgrade and a floor strip and wax the key issue office will be closed Nov. 12 and 13. Please plan ahead for any access needs so the shop staff can address them ahead of time. The key shop will resume its regular schedule on Nov. 14. Learn more on the closure.

Sikuliaq visiting Hawaii to support research efforts

The Seward-based research vessel Sikuliaq will be spending this winter in the tropics. The only ice-capable vessel in the U.S. academic research fleet arrived in Hawaii on Saturday, where it will operate for the next five months. The detour is part of an effort to help with projects in the region while other vessels are busy or undergoing repairs. Read more on the winter research trip.

CTC receives $4.3 million to boost Native student success

The University of Alaska Fairbanks' Community and Technical College has been awarded a $4.3 million federal Title III grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The five-year grant will be used to enhance academic programs, student services and partnerships with industry to improve access and success for Alaska Native students. Read more about the grant.

Power to head bolt outlets on campus

As temperatures drop in the Interior, Facilities Services has activated the head bolt outlets. Please note that we operate the HBOs on a cycle of one hour on and one hour off when temperatures range between 20°F and -25°F. When temperatures fall below -25°F, we will keep the HBOs on continuously. Read more on the winter temperature power schedule.

Mental Health First Aid training Nov. 22

Student Health and Counseling is offering Mental Health First Aid training to all students, staff and faculty at UAF. The next class is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 22. This is a virtual class with a fee of $35 per participant. Learn more and register for the next class.

Fossil tracks push range of large bird northward

Scientists from Fairbanks, New Mexico and Japan have discovered the first reported fossilized tracks of a large four-toed bird that inhabited central Alaska 90 million to 120 million years ago. Read more about the discovery.
