Last week in Chancellor White's Memorial Day message the Chancellor mentioned "At the University of Alaska Fairbanks, we are proud to be a veteran-serving institution. Almost 20% of our student body are veterans, active-duty members, or their dependents." Here in the UAF Department of Military and Veteran Services, we have the great privilege of serving our military-affiliated UAF students. Today I would like to tell you a little more about how we in the UAF Department of Military and Veteran Services work to support our students and engage with our military community here in Alaska and throughout the United States.

Friday Focus: College rename, leading the nation

    May 24, 2024

This week, the UA Board of Regents approved a regulation change that formalized the renaming of UAF's College of Rural and Community Development to the College of Indigenous Studies. This action effectively makes UAF the first public institution of higher education in the Nation to have such a College. The name change which took effect immediately, came as the result of a two-year effort to solicit feedback in the renaming process. In its over 50-year history, CRCD has been known by different names and focused primarily on meeting local and regional educational needs across the Bristol Bay, Northwest, Chukchi, Kuskokwim and Interior Alaska regions.

Friday Focus: MSI, ANNH and DNA

    May 17, 2024

In the world of government-generated acronyms, MSI and ANNH are two that are important for us to understand where they come from and why they are important to you and me - and to UAF. Let me start with an acknowledgment that acronyms from the government can be confusing. An appropriate analogy could be what the Opposing Bases podcast hosts call pushing penguins. Spoiler alert - your brain is an iceberg and penguins are knowledge. Penguins jump on only to knock others back into the water, but you really should click the link! I am going to attempt to push as few penguins off the iceberg as possible while inviting several on board, so I won't go into all the details. I want to help you connect the significance of our new eligibility to us, to our six goals, and to UAF's DNA.
