Alternative Spring Break

What is Alternative Spring Break?

The goal of the Alternative Break Program is to give students a chance to have a positive impact in another community through hands-on service projects. You can help be a part of the solution!

Every year the Student Leadership and Involvement Office takes a group of students somewhere outside of Alaska (sometimes outside of the United States!) to do a week of service work over Spring break. These trips are an amazing experience to make friends, experience new cultures, and to understand what service leadership means.

2019 AB: U.S. Virgin Islands

We had an incredibly successful 2019 Alternative Spring Break! Our team of 14 students worked with the St. Thomas Recovery Team (STRT) to lead a home remodel for a resident of St. Thomas, USVI. The homeowner has mobility issues and was unable to do repairs himself. Our team was able to fix the damage done by the hurricane and create a safe living space for the resident. The team also worked the the Friends of the USVI National Park to do trail maintence.

Our work was so successful that STRT invited us back! We had another productive two weeks in the USVI this July.

Each year we undergo the task of fundraising close to $20,000 to travel with students outside of Fairbanks to do service work! Your donations make all the difference to students who are committed to giving back. Alternative Spring Break starts students on a life long path of community service.
