Dr. Douglas H. Christensen
Professor of Geophysics, Emeritus
WHEREAS Dr. Douglas H. Christensen has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1988 to 2018; and
WHEREAS Dr. Christensen has amply demonstrated his love of teaching and commitment to students, especially at the undergraduate level; and
WHEREAS Dr. Christensen has skillfully mentored many graduate students to completion of their master’s and doctoral degrees and has led a memorable annual field trip to the Brooks Range; and
WHEREAS Dr. Christensen has had a lasting impact on the study of earthquakes and earth structure in Alaska, through the network of 150 broadband seismic stations that he established; and
WHEREAS Dr. Christensen’s research has yielded numerous influential publications, including a seminal paper with co-author Susan Beck on “The Rupture Process and Tectonic Implications of the Great 1964 Prince William Sound Earthquake”; and
WHEREAS Dr. Christensen ably served as the Associate Director of the Geophysical Institute for nearly twenty years;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Douglas H. Christensen for his extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Christensen and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Douglas H. Christensen as Professor of Geophysics, Emeritus; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Douglas H. Christensen, and conveyed to Dr. Christensen on this 4th day of May, 2018.
