Dr. Gary Kofinas

Professor of Resource Policy and Management, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Gary P. Kofinas has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 2002 to 2017; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kofinas directed the Resilience and Adaptation interdisciplinary graduate program from 2007 to 2010 and filled other leadership and key instructional roles with the program; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kofinas diligently mentored nine graduate students to completion of their master’s or doctoral degrees and continues to supervise additional students; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kofinas has been an international leader in research on the resilience of Indigenous rural communities as social-ecological systems, community-based resource stewardship, local knowledge in ecological monitoring and assessment, and related areas of scholarship; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kofinas earned national recognition, including the Secretary of the Interior’s Partnerships in Conservation Award and the Ecological Society of America’s Sustainability Science Award;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Gary P. Kofinas for his extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Kofinas and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Gary P. Kofinas as Professor of Resource Policy and Management, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Gary P. Kofinas, and conveyed to Dr. Kofinas on this 4th day of May, 2018.
