Dr. Joseph Thompson

Associate Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus (Posthumous)

WHEREAS Dr. Joseph Thompson served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1999 to 2014; and

WHEREAS Dr. Thompson is remembered by his students and colleagues as an outstanding teacher in the College of Liberal Arts; and

WHEREAS Dr. Thompson’s knowledge and passion for his subjects engaged students in difficult and thought-provoking themes in philosophy; and

WHEREAS Dr. Thompson expertly guided thoughtful discussions in his classes, exploring aesthetics, ethics, philosophy and beliefs of past civilizations; and

WHEREAS Dr. Thompson’s thoughtful research and scholarship ranged widely over topics including Nietzsche, continental philosophy, religion, arts and humanities; and

WHEREAS Dr. Thompson earned several important honors, including the Emil Usibelli Award for Distinguished Teaching;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Joseph Thompson for his extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Thompson, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Joseph Thompson as Associate Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus (Posthumous); and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Joseph Thompson, and conveyed on this 4th day of May, 2018.
