Dr. Thomas Weingartner

Professor of Oceanography, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Thomas J. Weingartner has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1988 to 2017; and

WHEREAS Dr. Weingartner expertly taught physical oceanography courses and mentored eleven graduate students, many of whom have risen to key positions in universities and government agencies; and

WHEREAS Dr. Weingartner is a highly productive researcher who has authored more than seventy-five peer-reviewed publications and is recognized as one of the nation’s leading experts in coastal oceanography; and

WHEREAS Dr. Weingartner has made important contributions to public service, including membership on the Committee on Emerging Research Questions in the Arctic for the National Research Council, the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System Fleet Improvement Committee, and several National Science Foundation science steering committees; and

WHEREAS Dr. Weingartner has earned several notable honors, including the Emil Usibelli Award for Distinguished Research and the Alaska Ocean Leadership Award for Alaska Marine Research;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Thomas J. Weingartner for his extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Weingartner and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Thomas J. Weingartner as Professor of Oceanography, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Thomas J. Weingartner, and conveyed to Dr. Weingartner on this 4th day of May, 2018.
