Dr. David Verbyla
Professor of Natural Resources Management, Emeritus
WHEREAS Dr. David Verbyla has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and service from 1993 to 2019; and
WHEREAS Dr. Verbyla developed and taught some of the first courses in geographic information systems at the University, has mentored fifteen graduate students and is well regarded as a teacher among undergraduate and graduate students, with his courses in constant high demand; and
WHEREAS Dr. Verbyla is recognized internationally as a leader in the use of remote sensing and GIS to study natural resources and the impacts of such phenomena as climate change, wildfire and land use in the North, and his work, including twenty-seven papers in the past eight years alone, has been widely cited by other scientists; and
WHEREAS Dr. Verbyla has shared his expertise with companies and public agencies through multiple short courses in remote sensing and GIS work, and is a founding section editor-in-chief for the journal Forests;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. David Verbyla for his extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Verbyla and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby confers upon Dr. David Verbyla the title of Professor of Natural Resources Management, Emeritus; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor as further evidence of the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ esteem and respect for Dr. David Verbyla, and conveyed to Dr. Verbyla on this fourth day of May, 2019.
