Dr.J. Leroy Hulsey

Professor of Structural Engineering, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. J. Leroy Hulsey has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and service from 1987 to 2020; and

WHEREAS Dr. Hulsey passed along his expertise and engineering passion to hundreds of students during his years at UAF; and he not only taught structural engineering courses but also engineering science courses taken by students of multiple engineering disciplines; and he was recognized by the students of Chi Epsilon, the civil engineering honor society, for excellence in teaching; and

WHEREAS Dr. Hulsey owned engineering firms and taught at two prestigious civil engineering schools before coming to UAF, where he has helped raise the prominence of the department’s research program; and his research in structural engineering, particularly in bridge design, is nationally recognized; and he assisted in designing the new UAF Engineering Learning and Innovation Facility’s high bay for testing of large structures; and

WHEREAS Dr. Hulsey has advised the UAF Steel Bridge Team annually since 1993; and the teams have won the American Institute of Steel Construction’s national competition two times and finished in the top ten nationally during four of the past five years; and this is a remarkable record, given that the contest draws more than two hundred teams, including entries from top U.S. engineering schools;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. J. Leroy Hulsey for his extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Hulsey and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby confers upon Dr. J. Leroy Hulsey the title of Professor of Structural Engineering, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor as further evidence of the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ esteem and respect for Dr. J. Leroy Hulsey, and conveyed to Dr. Hulsey on this twenty-third day of May, 2020.
