Mr. Gary Freitag

Professor of Fisheries, Emeritus

WHEREAS Mr. Gary Freitag served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 2008 to 2021; and

WHEREAS Mr. Freitag is described as an ideal teacher who is eminently personable, relatable and likeable, qualities he applied in formal education settings at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of Alaska Southeast and in the impressive range of informal teaching he undertook through countless public presentations and demonstrations; and

WHEREAS Mr. Freitag is regarded as an outstanding partner by other researchers for his intellect, pragmatism, collaborative spirit and understanding of Alaska’s marine environment in relation to ecological and social issues; and

WHEREAS Mr. Freitag has, in addition to University committee and mentoring work, brought distinction to the University with service on advisory panels and committees at statewide, regional and national levels; and he was a founder and president of the Board of Directors of the OceansAlaska Marine Science Center; and he has lent his expertise to activities such as an invasive species monitoring project with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Institute and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Alaska Marine Mammal Stranding Network;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Mr. Gary Freitag for his extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Mr. Freitag and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Mr. Gary Freitag as Professor of Fisheries, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Mr. Gary Freitag, and conveyed to Mr. Freitag on this first day of May, 2021.
