Mr. Brian O’Donoghue

Professor of Journalism, Emeritus

WHEREAS Mr. Brian O’Donoghue served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 2001 to 2020; and

WHEREAS Mr. O’Donoghue served as the bedrock of the print journalism program, teaching more than one thousand students and inspiring and editing their reporting of issues on campus and in the broader community; and many of today’s Alaska journalists were taught by Mr. O’Donoghue; and

WHEREAS Mr. O’Donoghue sustained a multiyear investigative reporting project on the conviction of four men for the 1997 murder of a Fairbanks teen; and his reporting and that of his students uncovered flaws in the case and contributed to the eventual release of the four men; and

WHEREAS Mr. O’Donoghue served as advisor to the Sun Star student newspaper and coordinated student participation in the annual Alaska Press Club conference in Anchorage; and he served on the committee that annually selected the Snedden chair and brought nationally prominent reporters, editors and photojournalists into UAF’s classrooms; and

WHEREAS Mr. O’Donoghue twice received the Alaska Press Club’s most prestigious recognition, the public service award; and he was chosen to serve as a 2012-2013 Fulbright-Nehru Scholar in Pune, India;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Mr. Brian O’Donoghue for his extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Mr. O’Donoghue and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Mr. Brian O’Donoghue as Professor of Journalism, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Mr. Brian O’Donoghue, and conveyed to Mr. O’Donoghue on this first day of May, 2021.
