Dr. Cary W. de Wit

Associate Professor of Geography, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Cary W. de Wit served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1999 to 2022; and

WHEREAS Dr. de Wit taught a broad variety of courses, creating unique opportunities that otherwise would not have been at UAF; and he advised a majority of undergraduate geography majors; and

WHEREAS Dr. de Wit’s research focused on American regional cultures, perceptual geography and sense of place; and his expertise in these topics and global geopolitics has drawn inquiries from numerous students and academics and led to many media interviews; and

WHEREAS Dr. de Wit served as Geography Department chair and program coordinator for a dozen years; and he served on numerous university committees; and

WHEREAS Dr. de Wit helped create a radio series on geopolitics that was broadcast locally and throughout Alaska and made available online; and he initiated several well-attended public presentations by visiting scholars, government officials, international experts and journalists;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Cary W. de Wit for his extensive contributions to the state of Alaska and to the university; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. de Wit and as evidence of the university’s desire that his identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Cary W. de Wit as associate professor of geography, emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Cary W. de Wit, and conveyed to Dr. de Wit on this sixth day of May, 2023.
