Dr. Alexandra F. Fitts

Professor of Spanish and Vice Provost, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Alexandra F. Fitts has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching and public service from 1995 to 2023, first as a professor and then as an administrator; and

WHEREAS Dr. Fitts’ students in the Spanish program greatly respected her both as a teacher and as a mentor; and

WHEREAS Dr. Fitts served as chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures for six years, during which time she earned a reputation for her wise, steady guidance; and she redesigned the foreign languages major; and she twice served as coordinator of the women, gender and sexuality studies program; and

WHEREAS when Dr. Fitts’ service as a professor concluded, she served as vice provost and dean of general studies, enhancing the academic experiences of students by providing guidance to deans and directors; and she oversaw academic advising and retention efforts; and Dr. Fitts served as accreditation liaison officer, leading UAF through several thorough and successful accreditation processes; and

WHEREAS Dr. Fitts served on and chaired numerous university committees; and she served in the Faculty Senate; and she trained to staff a campus help desk for students experiencing partner violence;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Alexandra F. Fitts for her extensive contributions to the state of Alaska and to the university; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Fitts and as evidence of the university’s desire that her identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Alexandra F. Fitts as professor of Spanish and vice provost, emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Alexandra F. Fitts, and conveyed to Dr. Fitts on this sixth day of May, 2023.
