Dr. John Blake
Director of Animal Resources Center and Attending Veterinarian, Emeritus
WHEREAS Dr. John Blake served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and service from 1988 to 2023; and
WHEREAS Dr. Blake is an outstanding teacher who offered graduate instruction and short courses in numerous topics in veterinary and wildlife science; and he served on committees for multiple graduate students; and
WHEREAS Dr. Blake’s expertise has supported many iconic UAF research programs; and his research into care of captive wildlife has helped restore muskox, woodland caribou and wood bison herds; and his insights into sled dog deaths led to new prevention practices; and he developed low-stress techniques for wildlife restraint; and
WHEREAS Dr. Blake, as UAF’s attending veterinarian, served all animal research facilities for more than thirty-five years; and he developed and directed the Animal Resources Center; and he led creation of the Department of Veterinary Medicine; and he helped create and directed the Office of Research Integrity; and he served as associate vice chancellor for research; and he served the university and Alaska in numerous other roles;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. John Blake for his extensive contributions to the state of Alaska and to the university; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Blake and as evidence of the university’s desire that his identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. John Blake as director of Animal Resources Center and attending veterinarian, emeritus; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. John Blake, and conveyed to Dr. Blake on this third day of May, 2024.
