Social security number questions
To protect your privacy, the University of Alaska Fairbanks will assign you a student ID (SID) number that is different from your social security number (SSN). Your SID, rather than your SSN, will be used to identify your educational records. Your SSN will not be recorded on transcripts.
However, UAF is required to obtain your SSN for federal financial aid and tax reporting purposes. Privacy Act Notice--Section 6109 of the Internal Revenue Code requires you to give your correct SSN to persons who must file information returns with the IRS to report certain information. The IRS uses the numbers for identification purposes and to determine who qualifies for an educational tax credit. For more information please refer to IRS code 6050S.
Your social security number is also required to report your enrollment to the National Student Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse verifies your enrollment for prospective employers, deferment of student loans, student discounts on insurance, and other official business.
To use the secure, online non-degree application your SSN is required. (This will assist us in avoiding duplication of student records.) If you do not wish to provide your SSN using the web application, you may download, complete and mail in an in-person registration form (PDF).
