Do you wish there was a secret code to hack your college experience? Join the Emerging Scholars Academy to give yourself a head start toward college success. Hosted by Student Support Services, a TRiO program, the Emerging Scholars Academy (ESA) is for first-year undergraduate students who are either first-generation college students, have limited income or have a documented disability. Not only does this community offer extra academic support and social connections, but it also gives you nine free credits.

As a participant of ESA, you will begin your UAF journey by moving into campus housing early for a nine-day intensive summer bridge program. The connections made during the summer bridge program continue as you take courses together in the fall and spring terms.

Participants need to be accepted into the ESA program.

Love nature and being outside? New to the state and want to explore the natural beauty of Alaska? An outdoor novice, but want to learn more? Outdoor Adventures is for you! Outdoor Adventures brings together students with a shared passion for adventure and outdoor recreation.

Outdoor Adventures includes a required course, RECR F 18K Alaska Outdoor Adventures. This one-credit-hour course introduces you to a sampling of outdoor Alaska activities. You will have a weekly lecture session and then participate in weekend trips with trained guides. Transportation and equipment are provided.

Ready to maximize your academic experience? Wickersham Hall is home to students in UAF’s Honors College Living Learning Community, including first-year students. The Honors Hall community provides opportunities for students to pursue excellence in an environment that supports academic and personal development. Programs are designed to expand critical and independent thinking, and help students become informed, responsible and active citizens. Students also enjoy social opportunities to bond with other academically engaged students. Residents must be a member of the UAF Honors College.

Seeking a supportive environment focused on inclusion and advocacy? Stonewall is a community of students who may identify as transgender, do not wish to prescribe to gender classifications, or are members or allies of the LGBTQ+ community. Membership is open to all students.

Participate in activities that explore topics regarding gender identity, sexual orientation, diversity and inclusion. In collaboration with the Nanook Diversity and Action Center (NDAC), you will assist with the event planning process for campus events, such as pride days, drag shows and FemCon.

Looking for a tight-knit community? Eileen’s House is a small community nestled in the woods designed to assist rural and Alaska Native students with their transition to campus life. You will participate in programs co-hosted by Rural Student Services that center on Alaska Native culture and ideals. You will prepare traditional foods in the large kitchen complete with a freezer to store foods from home.

Eileen’s House is named after Eileen Panigeo, an Alaska state representative and a UAF graduate. Eileen was a leader in the Inupiat community and dedicated public servant. Develop your own leadership skills, gain social connections and ease into your university experience. Eileen’s House is your home away from home at UAF.
